Unicorn Automation (NDT) Ltd
was formed in 1993 by the merger of three small companies; each company providing
the specialist skills required when designing, developing, manufacturing
and supplying large automated NDT testing systems. The
company is now wholly owned by the associated partnership Unicorn
Consultants.

 |
Both companies are located at
the same premises based in Corby, Northants, U.K. All of the personnel who
are employed by Unicorn Consultants, consist of individuals with
complimentary technical skills and who have accumulated over 50 man years
of experience in the design, development and application of non
destructive testing to a wide range of steel products with a particular
emphasis on automatic/semi-automatic inspection of flat and tubular
products.
|
|
Unicorn Consultants, as the name suggests, provide an NDT
consultancy and advisory service to industry and in addition, as a result
of the partnerships considerable experience in automatic / semi-automatic
NDT systems design/development, NDT audits on such systems can be
undertaken for clients on an independent basis.

The main
activity of Unicorn Automation (NDT) Ltd. is concerned with the supply of
automated NDT test systems. One of the main product lines is the range of
ultrasonic rotary heads for testing tubes up to 508mm diameter; the design
concepts for these test heads were originally developed over many years by
British Steel Technical Department. Since then Unicorn have carried out
further developments and introduced new designs to provide tube makers with
the opportunity to test tubular products much earlier in the production
process and at much faster throughput speeds.
|
|
All of the mechanical design/development associated with the testing systems
is carried out in house as is some of the manufacture of the mechanical parts. All software and hardware for the data
processing electronics is designed and developed in house. |
 |
|
 |
Before the
formation of Unicorn Consultants, the partners were all
previously employed with British Steel Technical and can call upon many
years experience installing test systems within the tube manufacturing
industry; this experience makes them well placed to understand the needs
of potential customers in similar industries. The ability to be flexible
with the supply of automated test equipment is very often the key to a
successful installation and personnel at Unicorn pride themselves on their
ability to customize their systems to suit customers exact requirements.
